Frequently Asked Questions
Are you actually serious about founding a new country?Absolutely. While founding a new state may be one of the most ambitious projects one can imagine, fear of failure should never stand in the way of ambition.
Where will Amestris be located? While we are still exploring potential locations for Amestris in the Asia-Pacific region, we do have a specific location in mind which we will not yet disclose for diplomatic reasons. Our ideal location would be coastal and have a predominantly temperate to warm climate with generous sunshine hours, in order to make our complete energy supply 100% self-sufficient.
How will Amestris be funded? We will need an incredible amount of resources to build a new country from scratch and make it self-sustaining. We hope to find many resourceful individuals and organizations that are intrigued by the idea of Amestris—or the creation of an experimental new country in general—and are willing to help finance in it.
There are countless reasons why people would want to see Amestris work. Crowdfunding through citizenship applications and donations by future Amestrians could furthermore result in a sizable amount of funds.
What is the Amestris Initiative? The Amestris Initiative is a global collective developing the vision of Amestris, building a network of people interested in Amestris, and working towards its realization. This website is a product of the Amestris Initiative.
Why did you choose the name Amestris?Amestris is the name of the fictional country where the Japanese serial Fullmetal Alchemist takes place. It was chosen as a tribute to this fantastic work of art and its creator Hiromu Arakawa. Amestris is a Persian name; Arakawa named the country in her work after the wife of Persian emperor Xerxes I.
What is the meaning of the national emblem? Our national emblem is a quincunx: an arrangement of five objects with four at the corners of a square, and the fifth at its center. Continuing the alchemy theme of our name, it was a symbol used historically in alchemy to represent the idea of the whole being more than the sum of its composing parts. This mirrors the vision of Amestris (the whole), which can only work if all of its composing parts are implemented to work holistically.
What is the thought process behind the flag design? Our flag has a minimalist design, featuring a green diamond on top of a white background.
White was chosen to represent a blank slate. It is also associated with cleanliness, goodness, innocence, purity, and peace. White usually has a positive connotation and is considered to be the color of perfection. It can also represent a successful beginning.
Green was chosen to represent nature on Earth. It traditionally symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green also has strong emotional correspondence with safety.
